Occasionally I will put out a call to other local studios who train teachers, asking them if they have recently certified anyone who lives near our Center, that might be interested in apprenticing, subbing, and eventually teaching at A Gentle Way.
Kristin Akerele answered that call almost three years ago, and is now one of our most popular teachers.
Certified by our friends at Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga, she began to apprentice in our classes and at the front desk. She soon realized that although she had gone through a great 200-hr training program in classical asana with a little modification training, it was not anywhere near what she needed to be able to work with the type of students that come into our Center that are dealing with injuries, chronic health or weight issues, deep stress, fear of movement, or heavy life challenges that are keeping them frozen.
Kristin willingly dived into mentorship with me, and Diane Ambrosini, and was soon in love with Dianes playful approach to classical Hatha yoga, and my therapeutic style – MIMSY Meditation in Movement Style Yoga®.
Combining what she was taught at Pilgrimage of the Heart, and A Gentle Way, she
has developed her own unique style of teaching that is selling out her morning classes on a regular basis. Classes with Kristin Akerele are filling up…
So it is with great happiness that as of August 1, I turn my Friday 10:15 class over to Kristin, so that her students who have not been able to get into the Monday and Wednesday morning classes have a third option each week.
I will miss my regular students I have had for so many years on Friday mornings, but I will be back to sub, and this will allow me to create a few new classes to help mentor new teachers into.
It is always a joy to watch teachers at A Gentle Way grow and thrive! We hope you’ll support classes with Kristin Akerele. Thank you Kristin, for letting your light shine, and many thanks to the students who are supporting her classes.
Teaching yoga in San Diego full-time since 1996
Kristin’s weekly classes:
Mondays: 10:00am – Gentle-Moderate (purple level)
Wednesdays: 10:30am – Gentle-Moderate (purple level)
Wednesdays: 9:00am – Mild-Moderate (light blue level)
Thursdays: 5:30pm – Slow Flow (dark blue level)
Thursdays: 7:00pm – Gentle Moderate (purple level)
Fridays: 10:15am – Gentle-Moderate (purple level)
Reservations suggested to guarantee a spot in these classes. Students must check-in 10 minutes before class time or reservation may be released to a waiting walk-in student.
Gentle-Moderate – (Purple Level) An all level class.
Classes usually begin on the floor, lying our your back, first releasing tension away from the spine. Asanas may progress to seated, kneeling on standing poses, with modifications offered. Purple level classes always combine the philosophy of yoga with mindfulness, breath techniques and asana.
These classes are yoga for your back, hips, spine and mind.
Mild-Moderate – (Blue Level) An all level class.
This is a great class for all levels of students who are either new to yoga, needing modifications, or ready to try yoga poses in different ways. Classical poses are deconstructed, or modified to awaken and stretch the body safely and slowly. Poses are varied each week so that over the course of the year students experiment with a large variety of asanas and are able to customize them for their body.
Asanas are even modified to a chair or wheelchair if you cannot stand or get to the floor.
Please note: Marguerite teaches this same type of class Saturdays at 9:45am.
Slow Flow – (Dark Blue Level) Most levels class.
Using classical Hatha Yoga asanas, we flow slowly in this class from standing, seated, kneeling, and floor poses. The classical yoga warm-up Sun Salutation is used with other asana variations to warm the body, stretch, strengthen, and build courage. Students should be able to easily tradition from standing to knee-to-floor poses without using a chair.

Other new classes or schedule changes at A Gentle Way in August:
Wednesdays: 5:00pm class changes to 4:30 and becomes:
Gentle Yoga for stress, healing, breath, and meditation – (All levels PINK)
Since most of the physical and emotional issues we face are rooted in stress, it is imperative to carve out the time to release tension out of the body to repair current disease, or keep it away. For students who are more physically able, they may feel as though this class is to easy, but it a true mindfulness, or meditation in movement practice. It is yoga for your back, hips, spine, neck, shoulders, and mind.
Learn self healing and breathing techniques that will change your mind and your body.
Will be on vacation for part of August. All his classes will be subbed by AGW teachers, so please continue to support his classes while he is gone. When he gets back, he will drop his Monday 7pm class, and begin the exciting NEW evening class:
Wednesdays 7:30-8:30 – Traditional Yoga Mix (Begins August 23)
This class will help students learn how to safely practice the classical poses of Hatha Yoga, such as headstand, shoulder stand, balance poses, and poses for build strength and foundations for the beautiful, more physical asanas of yoga. Steps and modifications will be taught so that all students can practice safe, effective levels, while discovering their inner strength.
Please note: Marguerite teaches this same type of class each Saturday at 8:00am.
