Our founder, Lanita Varshell, was one of the first plus-size yoga teachers of Gentle and Adaptive and Accessible Hatha Yoga in the United States.
Lanita has been adapting yoga for the needs of her own body, and thousands of students for over 20 years. She has taught over 10,000 weekly group classes, and over 750 private healing and new student sessions.
When she began teaching in 1996, she first thought she would only attract plus-size yoga students like herself, but her style of teaching was so unique, and so well received that these women began bringing their sisters, brothers, husbands, and mothers.
Lanita soon began to be known as the queen of yoga relaxation and modifications in San Diego, offering unique multi-level classes that benefit every body type.

How to get started:
The best way to begin is always with a Private Session. Private sessions are not required, but we have found that students are more comfortable when they first work one-on-one with the teacher who classes they will be attending.
In a private session we will spend time getting to know you, hearing your yoga goals, health and movement history, and doing a few sample poses and body testing to see how wells your body moves. We will show you how to use props that might be best for a safer, more enjoyable practice. Scroll down for more info.
Another great way to get started is with our monthly Yoga for Beginners Workshop.
At just $25 per person, this is a great way to meet other people like you, new to yoga or our Center, and learn about our teachers, classes, props, and pricing. A variety of poses from different class levels will be demonstrated, which you can watch, or participate in.You will walk away knowing what classes you will be more comfortable in, and knowing if you would like a follow-up private session as well.

Then feel free to begin attending group classes right away! If you are a larger body, but can easily move, you will not only “fit in” to most of our classes at A Gentle Way, but feel comfortable in our group classes that cater to every age, size, and body type.
